Changing an IP or a location: know the difference

JustHost explained the options for customers whose VPS became unreachable from Russian networks following IP restrictions.

Replacing the IP preserves files and settings. Changing location creates a new VPS and removes the previous contents: back up your data first. The support announcement contains the full guidance.

Preserve your data before choosing an action

The important distinction in the support message is between two different operations. Replacing an address and creating a VPS in another location are not equivalent. Confusing them can turn an attempt to restore connectivity into the loss of the old server's contents.

Save files, databases and required settings somewhere separate before making changes. Check that the copy is readable and complete. Then follow the current support instructions for the chosen operation; ask support first if the sequence is unclear. After an address change, review settings that refer to the previous IP.

  • Keep an independent backup of important contents.
  • Confirm whether the action replaces an IP or changes the location.
  • Check DNS and client connectivity afterwards.
