DDoS: when availability becomes a business issue

An attack affects more than a server. It can interrupt orders, customer support and a team's everyday work.

In RBC, Anton Pankratov discusses why DDoS matters to businesses of different sizes and why infrastructure availability belongs in business planning.

Preparation starts before an attack

When users cannot reach a service, a technical incident quickly becomes an operational problem. The team answers questions, customers postpone actions and work is delayed. A useful DDoS discussion therefore starts with the business functions that need to remain available.

Create a clear response process: who notices a problem, who is informed and where users receive updates. Check provider contacts and protection terms separately. Monitoring helps detect an incident, but it cannot replace traffic filtering or an agreed response process.

  • Assign responsibility for communication with the provider and customers.
  • Keep working contacts outside the affected service.
  • Check protection and recovery terms for your own plan.
