Small teams need backups, clear access permissions and service monitoring too. Reliability starts with these everyday practices.
Anton Pankratov's RBC article looks at building manageable IT infrastructure for a small business and making responsibility for its operation clear.
Start with a setup the team can maintain
For a small business, infrastructure needs to be understandable to the people running it. A complex setup without a clear owner soon becomes a collection of forgotten accounts and dependencies. A short set of working habits is more useful than a large document nobody revisits.
Write down which services the business needs, who has access and what to do during an outage. Make sure accounts and backups do not depend on one person's laptop. Add monitoring and automation where they remove recurring work, rather than adding complexity for its own sake.
- Give each important service a responsible owner.
- Keep access details and instructions in a managed workspace.
- Practise recovery before it becomes urgent.
